Dire Plight of the Western Monarch Butterfly

Between Yesterday and Tomorrow by Margaret Duarte featuring the Monarch Butterfly

In 2003, when I started writing book three of my “Enter the Between” fiction series, I knew the Monarch Butterfly would play a major role in the story: as part of the natural setting of Pacific Grove (home to my story and to the Monarch Butterfly Sanctuary) and as the symbolic representation of transformation and rebirth.

I’m saddened to read that attendees at the first-ever Western Monarch Summit currently being held in Carmel Valley (the setting of book one of my four-book series) are discussing the dire plight of the Western Monarch–a 99% drop since the 1990s.

Will the Western Monarch survive extinction or live on only between the covers of fiction?
